Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a clamor for introducing of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games globally continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
